Tewodros Fekadu is a young author who knows only too well the value of inner fire to keep the flame of hope alive. Born in Eritrea in 1971 amid the Ethiopian/Eritrean civil war, Tewodros spent his childhood being handed around relatives, surviving the horrors of the streets and yearning to be loved. His book, No One’s Son, has received critical acclaim and he will provide a lunchtime talk about his work and life.

Now that your appetite has been fired up, make tracks to the Mackay City Library for another helping. Tewodros will be joined by award-winning playwright and director, Angela Chaplin, where he will read from his book No One’s Son and she will read (with assistance from the local African community) from The Black Madonna. This work, involving multimedia, dance drama and food, is about a young African teenage boy who becomes a refugee when his mother has to give her son to the unknown. Angela has directed more than 200 plays and received awards from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, National Writers Guild Award (AWGIE), Melbourne Green Room, Perth Actors Equity Directors Award and the Sydney Performing Arts Awards. She has accepted invitations to work in Japan, Croatia, India, Venezuela and many of Australia’s main theatre companies. Afterwards, Tewodros and Angela will be available to answer questions. This event is free.
